Como Italy

A beauty that is has to be seen to be believed

The lady of the lakes is how the lake of this name is known. Como town is not an outstanding beauty but the rest of the lake presents one of the most enchanting and attractive scenarios in Italy and indeed in Europe. Settle into a villa along the lake and you will not be sorry for having discovered this paradise.

Lake Como is one of the more famous Italian lakes and most certainly the most beautiful. Just a 60 minutes drive north of Milan (without traffic), the area offers stunning scenery - lush green hills plunging into the deep blue waters of the lake. The lake itself is the shape of an inverted 'Y', with the town of Como on the southern end. All along the lake, small villages of charm welcome you. Little restaurants border the lake with amazing vistas where you lunch under the platane trees and arrive and depart by motor boat if you wish. You can even fly to the lake by hydroplane as long as there is a pontoon where you wish to land.

The villages around the lake give the area its magic: Bellagio, nestling in the inverted 'V', is a charming and relaxed village
with lovely old buildings and winding, hilly streets. Menaggio, on the western shore, has a beach. Varenna is a peaceful resort, smaller than Bellagio and also very beautiful, where you can admire the views from the Castello de Vezio.

The water is not considered as clean as it should be or as clean as the waters of Swiss lakes but efforts are being made to improve this. This said, many are completely comfortable to swim in its waters and to enjoy water sports in the lake. There are tremendous villas and this is a fantastic spot to enjoy in summer so long as you are not looking for a jet set night life.
