Sintra Portugal

The resort for Lisbon’s royalty

Sintra is an ancient town located on the Atlantic coastline half an hour drive from the centre of Lisbon and fifteen minutes from the well known seaside towns of Cascais and Estoril. It has long been famous as the resort that the royalty of Lisbon retired to during hotter months for its cooler and more tropical micro-climate. It has easy access to numerous beaches and to the vineyards of Colares, as well has having immense architectural and cultural interest for visitors. It is very green and you are quickly off the tourist streets if you want to be and into walking paths that criss-cross the forests that surround it.

Since the World Expo in Lisbon, Sintra has become an increasingly popular tourist destination offering along with its cobble stoned streets, magnificent buildings, and the famous castles of Pena and of the Moors. It can be packed by tourist buses at certain times of the year, but drive a few minutes in any direction and they disappear leaving you to enjoy beautiful villas, in lush vegetation, with magnificent views. If you are into night-life you will head for Estoril, Cascais or Lisbon ,all very accessible now by highway. For beaches you have several choices although keep in mind that the water is cold and the winds often strong during summer afternoons. You can sail, horse ride, taste wine, visit other towns and cities of Portugal, or just eat well and do lots of walking.

In many ways you will feel yourself lost in another world, drinking “galões” as the local coffee with milk is referred to or eating " Pastéis de bacalhau " (cod patties) if you like savories or " Pastéis de Nata " if you have a sweet tooth. Come here to let life slow down a bit and to live in a Europe that still feels much like it did 20 years ago. Socially you will find the area full of long-time English, German and other Europeans residents who have been great fans of this area for many years and have lived in its lovely homes. You might have some trouble with the Portuguese language but most Portuguese speak excellent English today.
