Zermatt Switzerland
The Matterhorn beckons
Zermatt is famous for at least two things: the Matterhorn and its car-free atmosphere. But there is far more to Zermatt than this - it is a special place that has no comparison. During the day you can take one of the cable cars up into the mountains and enjoy a book or take a walk on the green alpine pastures. The mountain restaurants such as Chez Vrony are well known. In the summer there is The Zermatt Festival, a Chamber Music Festival and Academy with Ensembles and Soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic. For the more sporty, there is a glacier ski area that is open 365 days a year, and Zermatt even hosts its own marathon in July, with a vertical climb of 1800m.
Zermatt is a lovely village to stroll about in, and the restaurants are good for traditional fare, but it is not here that you would come for gourmet meals - although the Zermatterhof does have a highly recommended restaurant. The night clubs and bars playing live music attract a crowd of all ages and all nationalities in a very casual atmosphere. Once in Zermatt you are served by electric buses and taxis and, if energetic, by your own two legs.
